The conference marked the end of a four year research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), on the history of the UK’s Musicians’ Union. The topics discussed during the conference went beyond the Musicians’ Union and included studies on musical labour and the conditions under which musicians work and produce music.
